ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Over a half-foot of snow fell Saturday across parts of Georgia, and weather satellites are picking it up today!

Seeing Snow From Space

One of the remarkable aspects of this Saturday snowstorm? Weather satellites captured it all from space. Advanced meteorological satellites can actually “see” the snow blanket on the ground, revealing the storm’s impressive footprint across Georgia and into the Carolinas, where even higher totals were measured. This satellite technology gives the First Alert team of meteorologists and you the viewer a bird’s-eye view of winter weather patterns and helps us understand exactly where the heaviest snow fell (or is falling).

The Snowstorm’s Greatest Hits

The heaviest snow stayed locked over the higher terrain of far northeast Georgia throughout Saturday, where some areas received truly impressive accumulations:

The Top Totals:

  • Clayton: 8 inches
  • Tiger: 7.5 inches
  • Cornelia: 7 inches
  • Buford and Clarkesville: 6 inches each
  • Dunlap: 5.3 inches
  • Mulberry: 5 inches
  • Dacula: 4.8 inches
  • Dawsonville: 4.5 inches

Moderate Accumulations Spread Across North Georgia

A broader band of three to four inches of snow fell across a wider swath of north Georgia, including Madison, Jefferson, Flowery Branch, Hemp, Hiawassee, Gainesville, Monroe, Athens, and Lexington.

Winter Driving Hazards Remain

While road conditions across the region have improved since Saturday, our team of First Alert meteorologists urges caution: there are still patches of ice clinging to roadways, especially in shaded areas and on bridges. These icy spots can be deceptively hard to see and remain slick despite improving conditions.

If you’re heading out, please:

  • Slow down and use extra caution
  • Watch for ice patches in shaded areas and on bridges
  • Remember that temperatures remain very cold, and icy areas can refreeze quickly
