NEW YORK (TNND) — Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle immediately began debating gun control after four people were shot and killed, including an NYPD officer, in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday by a gunman reportedly targeting the offices of the National Football League (NFL).

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., suggested gun control laws would not help make the public safer.

“On Capitol Hill, probably beginning in the morning, there’ll be the inevitable call by some of my colleagues for more gun control laws. We’ve got hundreds of gun control laws, maybe thousands,” Kennedy said on Sean Hannity’s show. “We don’t need more gun control, we need more idiot control."

Kennedy instead suggested bringing back stop-and-frisk, a policy that ended in 2013 after it was found to be unconstitutional.

A judge ruled the controversial policy violated the Fourth Amendment and allowed police to stop, interrogate and search New York City citizens "on the sole basis of 'reasonable suspicion.'"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the shooting "tragic and horrifying."

"Mass shootings are a plague, Jeffries wrote in a statement. "The gun violence epidemic continues to afflict our country and now has shattered lives in our great City. The time has come for decisive action."

A motive for the shooter, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, was not immediately clear, according to police.

New York Mayor Eric Adams told CBS Mornings on Tuesday that Tamura had a note on him after shooting himself in the chest. A preliminary investigation indicated Tamura took the wrong elevator bank up to NFL headquarters, which he had expressed grievances about.

Sources told CNN that Tamura was a former competitive football player, and the note mentioned he allegedly suffered from CTE, a brain disease that develops from repetitive head trauma.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned during a news conference on Monday that the shooter had a "documented mental health history."

Investigators reported Tamura asked for his brain to be studied and wrote: “You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you."
