ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - This 4/20, law enforcement in Albany is reminding residents that marijuana laws in most of Georgia remain unchanged.
While several states have legalized recreational marijuana, Georgia still has strict state laws in place. Officials said only limited medical use is allowed under specific conditions, and recreational use remains illegal in Georgia.
Police said during holidays like 4/20, they often see an increase in marijuana-related activity and are urging residents to be aware of the law as they continue enforcement efforts.
“In some places, marijuana is legalized. I mean, but we in the state of Georgia, it is illegal to use marijuana. We are not a marijuana-free state. So marijuana is illegal. If you have some kind of health issues, it can be taken and used for medical issues. But law enforcement in this city, we are going to enforce marijuana laws,” said Deputy Chief Wendy Luster of the Albany Police Department.
Officers said their goal is to keep the community safe, reminding residents that violations could lead to fines or arrest under Georgia law.
Some cities in Georgia have decriminalized marijuana one ounce or less. Albany is not one of those cities.
