TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis honored Florida State University’s Police Department Wednesday “for their valor in confronting and neutralizing the shooter on FSU’s campus earlier this month.”
Twenty-year-old FSU student Phoenix Ikner opened fire on the campus on April 17, claiming two lives and injuring six others, including himself, according to authorities.
FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower and seven of his officers were awarded the Governor’s Medal of Heroism, Governor DeSantis announced on social media late Wednesday morning.
“These brave officers ran toward danger at great personal risk and potential sacrifice to protect students and staff on FSU’s campus,” DeSantis said. “This is truly answering the call of duty and putting others first.”
Ikner, who remains hospitalized after getting shot once in the jaw by law enforcement, has yet to appear in court. Because of that, the suspected gunman has yet to be formally charged.
