BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Gov. Brad Little has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of two Idaho firefighters who were killed, and a third who was seriously injured, when a gunman ambushed them in North Idaho.
The lowering of the flags is to begin immediately and will remain in effect until the day after the firefighters' memorial.
The initial call for a brush fire came in at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Shortly after firefighters responded, they broadcast at about 2 p.m. that they were being shot at, prompting a swift response from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies.
Law enforcement officers later exchanged gunfire with the suspect on the mountain, according to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris in a Sunday night press conference.
SWAT officers later found the man deceased on the mountain with a weapon nearby, and transported his body off the mountain as the wildfire was getting closer, according to Norris.
The entire State of Idaho grieves the profound loss of the firefighters killed in the shocking ambush in North Idaho. All our public safety officers, especially our firefighters, bravely confront danger on a daily basis but we have never seen a heinous act of violence like this on our firefighters before. This is not Idaho. This indescribable loss is felt deeply by all those in the firefighting community and beyond. Please join Teresa and me as we continue to pray for the victims and their loved ones," Governor Little said.
The injured firefighter was said to be "fighting for his life, but in stable condition," as of Sunday night. The identity of the firefighters has not been released.
The Associated Press has identified the shooting suspect as Wess Roley.
"We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional," said Sheriff Norris. "These firefighters did not have a chance."
