CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - The Grady County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) addressed ongoing concerns regarding an incident that took place at a baseball game on April 3.

An incident occurred during the Bainbridge vs. Cairo baseball game, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We understand the interest in this matter and believe it is important to provide clear and accurate information,” the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Earl Prince attended the game with his family, the sheriff’s office statement read. During a close pitch that was called a strike, a verbal comment was made from the stands by a family member of the sheriff, followed by a response from a player, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Prince reportedly made a remark to the home plate umpire that he was losing control of the game, according to the sheriff’s office.

Following that remark, the umpire issued a warning that further remarks could result in ejection, and Sheriff Prince complied, the sheriff’s office said. GCSO said that Sheriff Prince voluntarily relocated to another area near the outfield scoreboard.

GCSO said that at no point did Sheriff Prince make derogatory comments or threats to players nor was he ejected or escorted from the game, contrary to claims that have circulated publicly.
