Rizzo testified that he and Guzman were housed in nearby holding cells and that he overheard her make incriminating statements about the shooting.

“She said that she gave him what he deserved,” Rizzo told the court. “She was being cheated on, and she was very unhappy about that. And that, you know, in shooting him, that he got what he deserved. That he’s dead and he got what he deserved. Yes, ma’am.”

During direct examination, prosecutors asked Rizzo whether he had been offered any incentive in exchange for his testimony. Rizzo said he had not.

“You have a man that’s dead in the ground, and justice needs to be served,” he said. “No, and I haven’t been promised anything for my testimony here today as well.”

During cross-examination, the defense focused on Rizzo’s credibility, questioning him about past conversations with investigators regarding the possibility of a reduced sentence.

Defense attorney Julius Collins also challenged whether it would have even been possible for the two to communicate from that distance inside the jail.

“You want the ladies and gentlemen of the jury to believe that, in the booking area where guards sit in between you all, that Ms. Guzman shouted out to you, I attempted to shoot him because he was cheating,” said Collins.

“There were no guards present in there at the time, sir,” Rizzo responded.

Court resumes tomorrow, March 5, with GBI Investigator Ryan Hicks who is scheduled to testify about his interrogation of Guzman following her husband’s death from a gunshot wound.
