VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - In the heart of TitleTown, where Friday night lights shine bright and dreams are born in backyards. One hometown hero is turning his success into an opportunity for the next generation.
“It’s a village. It’s a village. I’ve been here pretty much my entire life’s where I went to high school. I just want to get back to the game that has done a lot for me and my family, um, over the years. I just want to continue to make an impact,” said Moore.
Kenneth Moore II is a standout star for the Indianapolis Colts. He returned home this weekend, not for a packed night at Martin Stadium, but for something even bigger: his youth football camp. It was held at Lowndes County High School from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“I think when people think about football, they think about such a physicality of, of the game or how, how brutal it can be. but, that’s life in general. And I think, uh, football has taught me a lot,” Moore said.
More than 200 kids signed up for the free camp, learning skills on the field and lessons from someone who knows it best, more is one of the top cornerbacks in the National Football League and a recent nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
“I believe the kids feel like they can get, they can achieve the same thing,” said Edgar Denton, middle school football coach in Lowndes County.
“Real excited. Real excited,” said T.J. Peak, camp participant.
“He one of my favorite football players,” said Brysen Williams, camp participant.
It wasn’t just about the athletes on the gridiron, but those who fill the sidelines as the quarterbacks’ youth camp, also open to cheerleaders this year.
“Cheerleading, that’s a sport of its own. They’re a big part of football. Getting everybody into it. Uh, we incorporated that over in Germany, and we had a great turnout, and we just wanted to do the same thing here at home to make that type of change. We wanted to do something different this year as well,” said Moore.
The eight-year NFL veteran brought along a fellow South Georgia native and his current teammate in the league, defensive tackle Grover Stewart. Together, they’ve been to stadiums all across the country, even so it’s clear that Moore’s heart has never left the concrete palace.
Each camper received a swag bag, camp t-shirt, and lunch courtesy of the Lake View Mayor.
