Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Salvation Army of Albany and the Southwest Georgia community are mourning the loss of Captain Chris Powell, a visionary leader whose service to the members of the Albany community left an enduring legacy of hope and compassion.

A Dedicated Servant of the Community

Captain Powell was known for his tireless dedication to addressing homelessness and his commitment to providing meals Monday through Friday to those in need. He worked diligently to ensure that no one in our community went without hope or help.

His passion for lifting those most in need was recognized beyond The Salvation Army. Just a week and a half before his passing, Captain Powell received United Way’s Community Impact allocation—a moment that reflected not just a financial partnership, but a shared vision between two organizations dedicated to transforming lives in Southwest Georgia.

Though Captain Powell’s time in Albany was brief, his impact on the community will be long-lasting.

According to the Georgia Division General Secretary of The Salvation Army, “As you can imagine, The Salvation Army has lost a solid and respected officer. Even though Captain Powell had only been in Albany for a short while, his impact in the community is apparent. So many friends and colleagues have reached out to share their profound respect for Chris. The work of the army prospered under his careful watch and will continue in the days ahead.”

Leadership has confirmed that preparations are underway to ensure that The Salvation Army’s presence and vital services will continue to thrive despite this tragic loss.

Captain Powell’s legacy is one of service, dedication and a belief in the dignity and worth of every person in need.
