ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — [UPDATE: 4/8/26 @2:35 PM] - WALB has confirmed with Dougherty County Jail officials that John Fleming has been denied bail.

[ORIGINAL: 4/7/26 @12:33PM] - A Dougherty County man was arrested and charged after his wife said he shot her in the face during a domestic argument on Monday, April 6, according to the Dougherty County Police Department (DCPD). The woman is now hospitalized, officials said.

John Fleming, 57, was charged with the following, DCPD said:

• Aggravated assault
• Aggravated battery
• Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
• Tampering with evidence

DCPD said this comes after a domestic dispute at the couple’s residence on Lovers Lane just after midnight on Monday.

Police said they arrived at the residence at about 12:23 a.m. in response to a shooting report. Then, the victim reportedly told police that her husband shot her. Fleming was identified as the woman’s husband and taken into custody at the scene without incident, according to the police department. Officials said he was taken to the Dougherty County Jail.

The woman was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Her exact condition is unknown at this time.
