Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Shots were fired near a WALB crew Thursday morning as we interviewed neighbors on the same Albany street where police say a person was injured in a shooting late Wednesday evening.

WALB was in the area following up on the investigation when we heard two gunshots on the street. No one with WALB was hurt.

Albany police were called about 5:29 p.m. Wednesday (July 8) to the 400 block of South Dellwood Drive, where what came in as a disorderly conduct call was later determined to be an aggravated assault involving a firearm, according to an incident report.

Police said the incident involved multiple people and began with a fight. Police Chief Michael Persley told WALB a fight broke out between girls and that teenagers—roughly ages 16 to 19—were involved when multiple shots rang out.

A witness pointed to a black Honda Accord leaving the area and said the occupants were involved in the shooting, the report states.

The officer followed the car and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, identified in the report as Zaquarius Respess, appeared visibly upset and told the officer his brother had been shot and was in an alley, according to the report.

Police followed the driver to an alley behind the 1900th block of W. Whitney Ave., where the officer wrote that a Black male, later identified as Tyshaun Shuman, did not appear to have visible injuries. As officers checked the other occupants, the report says the officer observed what appeared to be a bullet graze wound on a juvenile who had been seated in the rear passenger seat.

Medical personnel transported the juvenile to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

In a statement to police, Respess said he and friends went to a park because female friends were involved in a fight, but he would not identify those involved. Respess told police that after the fight ended, a group of Black males began shooting and that he remembered one Black male wearing yellow and carrying a long, black AR-style rifle. Respess also told police neither he nor anyone with him fired back and that there were no guns in the vehicle.

After the occupants exited the Honda, APD says they saw a black ski mask on top of the center console and a spent shell casing on the rear passenger-side floorboard.

Tyshaun Shuman, Zaquarius Respess and Desmond Lumpkin were detained and taken to the Law Enforcement Center.

As WALB followed up in the neighborhood, we saw damage that appeared consistent with gunfire. WALB observed bullet holes at two homes about a block apart.

One homeowner told WALB she has been thinking about moving because of repeated incidents in the area.

“I know I need to get out of here … because people keep having incidents and stuff over here,” she said.

She said she did not go outside during the shooting but heard the gunfire after police blocked off streets.

“They had all the streets blocked off. Nobody couldn’t come up and down the streets,” she said. “After a while, I heard the shooting out here … I just heard it.”

The homeowner said she later found a bullet hole in her bedroom window.

“I looked out my bedroom window this morning and there was a big bullet hole in my window,” she said. “The window cracked and they shot my clothes — shot the hangers.”

She said it was not the first time she has dealt with gunfire near her home.

“The first time they came over here, shooting at each other … they shot my car right here,” she said. “I had to put my car in the shop and get it fixed.”

Another neighbor told WALB they have called police repeatedly about teens and young adults gathering to fight at the nearby park — and said patrols often arrive after groups have already left.

“I have called the cops numerous times about teenagers… coming over here to fight at the park,” the neighbor said. “They have came and ride down the alley. But by that time, they get in their cars and they go.”

The neighbor said they believe more patrols—including officers walking through the area—could help.

“If you know that this area is pretty much where the kids come and fight after school, I would say, ‘Hey, come and patrol,’” the neighbor said. “Have foot traffic… walk around and see what’s going on, see what the complaints are about.”

The neighbor also urged parents to keep closer tabs on where their children are and who they are with.

“That goes within the home,” the neighbor said. “Just making sure you know where your children are… because you know they’re not at home. They somewhere getting in trouble.”

WALB is working to learn whether anyone has been arrested or charged and whether the shots heard near our crew were related to the earlier incident.
