Description

AMERICUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Police in Americus are interviewing victims and looking at door cam video following a shooting that left 3 people injured early Sunday morning.

The shooting occurred in the 300 block of Poplar Street around 2:30 a.m.

According to Americus police Chief Mark Scott, 2 male victims and a female was injured when someone in a dark colored vehicle pulled up and started firing shots from the vehicle.

“They were in the area. They had driven over there to speak to a friend of theirs,” Scott said. The female was sitting in a vehicle at the time. The two males had gotten out and were talking to a friend. According to witnesses, a dark colored vehicle, unknown make and model, drove through the area, and when it got to the end of the block, the occupants fired shots back towards the group that was standing there.

Police say witnesses also stated several cars were also damaged in the area.

According to police, the female suffered a minor injury to the hand. The two males were shot in their legs, and were transported to Phoebe Medical Center.

At least one of the male victims had to be life-flighted to a Macon trauma center, but both males have now been released.

Despite the past weekend, Scott said violent activity is relatively low.

“Americus isn’t immune to crime like any other community. We’ve been doing really well so far this year. This month or last month, compared to this same time a year ago, is way down on our violent crimes and on property crimes. We hope to continue that trend and solve this particular incident,” he said.

Police don’t have many leads after going door to door around the neighborhood, and they are urging the community to say something.

AND WITH NOT MANY LEADS AFTER GOING DOOR TO DOOR AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD-- THEY URGE THE COMMUNITY TO SAY SOMETHING.

“We know that violent crime is rarely random, almost never. It’s highly likely that whoever did this, whether the persons that were hit were the intended target, more than likely somebody in that neighborhood knows who they were coming over there for. They know who did it, and they just need to tell us,” Scott said.

Police are asking anyone with information to give them a call at 229- 924-3677 or 229-937-9011.
