Description

LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Investigators returned on the night of Monday, June 22, to the neighborhood where a racially charged shooting took place Saturday, June 13, Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachalls confirmed.

Rachalls said investigators were at the scene and their work was related to the shooting. He said it was not a new incident.

Rachalls said he could not provide more information because the investigation is ongoing.

Shooting drew national attention

The shooting happened in front of a home on Autumn Leaf Drive and has gained national attention. A cellphone video from a family gathering shows people, including children, running after gunshots were fired.

Investigators charged Jeffrey Kinzer with aggravated assault.

Witnesses told investigators Kinzer shouted a racial slur from a car before later returning in body armor with an AR-15-style rifle and firing shots.

Investigators said the gunfire is not believed to have hit people at the home, but Kinzer was struck with return fire.

Calls for additional charges

In the days since the shooting, members of the public, including family attorneys, have pushed for more serious charges. Investigators have said they need more information from witnesses.

Three days after the shooting, Lee County District Attorney Lewis Lamb released a statement saying he could seek an indictment for additional charges, but that decision would be based on available evidence.

Lamb also said the victim or victims must be identified by name in a warrant or indictment, and that people with information would need to be identified and interviewed.

It is unclear what evidence investigators are looking for or hope to find in the neighborhood.

The GBI is assisting in the investigation, and Rachalls confirmed that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead investigating agency.
