WASHINGTON (7News) — Tourism leaders in the nation’s capital are walking a fine line — reassuring visitors that D.C. is safe, even as the federal takeover of the city’s police force makes headlines across the country.
From Penn Quarter to the National Mall, tourists are still snapping photos, but there’s no doubt many are arriving with questions. Destination D.C. President and CEO Elliott Ferguson says that’s exactly what he’s hearing from visitors.
Ferguson points out that crime is at a 30-year low. But he admits perception is powerful — and right now, the national spotlight suggests violence and military control. With Restaurant Week starting Monday, the Restaurant Association is encouraging eateries to call customers directly if reservations drop — trying to keep dining rooms full.
Ferguson said this isn’t D.C.’s first test — pointing to Jan. 6, the sniper attacks, and even 9/11 — and each time, tourism bounced back.

But some, like city economic development expert John Boyd, believe extra security may actually help.
“We think this will be a boost for tourism. The additional law enforcement presence I think gives comfort to a lot of folks and makes them feel more comfortable spending money in the district,” Boyd said. Ferguson says the challenge now is communication.
“What about the thousands of people that are coming domestically and internationally? Not only are they having to do more due diligence in terms of giving them insight as to how safe the city is. But we are now having to reach out to all of those customers and share with them exactly the same thing so it just makes it much more difficult,” Ferguson said.
While there haven’t been any events or conventions cancelled, phone calls from concerned visitors have been non-stop. Ferguson said they’re sharing facts with hotels and visitors — hoping word of mouth can help offset the national narrative.
