‘It makes a huge difference’: Lee County officials urge residents to enroll in homestead exemption

Description

LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Lee County officials have announced they will conduct a reassessment of property values.

Officials say this is due in part to an increase in people purchasing homes and development. Counties have to maintain and be in compliance with the state property value assessment.

At least half of the county has enrolled in the homestead exemption. That’s something Luke Singletary, Lee County Commission Chairman, says could save you thousands of dollars.

“They’re able to freeze the tax value of their house to last year’s rate, or if they buy a house in the future, to the previous year’s rate. It will stay at that rate until they sell their home or make a major improvement to their home that changes the value. So, it is very important that people enroll in the homestead exemption. In the past, it has not made that big of a difference, but for Lee County, county taxes this year, it makes a huge difference,” said Singletary.

To enroll in the homestead exemption, all you have to do is go to the tax assessor’s office, show proof of residence, and fill out a one-page form.

You have until August 15th, after that you can still enroll, but it will lock in the current year’s rate.
