Description

ATLANTA, Ga. (WGXA) — Jason Esteves has resigned from his state senate seat, where he represented District 35, which includes parts of Fulton and Cobb counties.

Esteves was first elected in 2022 and re-elected last year. During his tenure, he said he worked to ease the cost of living for Georgians.

"I've worked with my colleagues with the Democratic Party and I worked with my constituents at home to make sure that we deliver results for them, whether it was ensuring that seniors had $1,000 off their property taxes in the city of Atlanta or working with Republicans to cap the cost of increases on property taxes across the state," said Esteves.

In April, Esteves announced his candidacy for governor of Georgia. He said he resigned from the senate to focus on his gubernatorial campaign, believing he can be the governor Georgia needs.

"I've been in the senate long enough to see what works and what doesn't work, and at the end of the day, what people want is a governor that is laser-focused on economic issues. Laser-focused on making life better for the people here in Georgia," Esteves said.

With his sights set on the governor's office, Esteves said he aims to improve conditions for all Georgians.

"There are folks that have been left behind, whether it's with housing, whether it's with food cost, whether it's with child care cost. Everything has gotten much more expensive, and life has gotten a little bit harder, and I'm running because Georgia deserves better," he said.

Now that District 35's senate seat is empty, Governor Brian Kemp must call a special election to fill it before 2026's Legislative session which begins in January.
