UPDATE 7/24/2025 – A Coffee County judge has granted the injunction against the commercial poultry farm.

WALB has confirmed that the judge signed the order at around 10:30 Thursday morning.

COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Residents in Coffee County are now fighting against a proposed 60-house commercial poultry operation on Highway 441 South in Coffee County, according to Douglas Now.

On Friday, July 18, a group of residents filed a suit in Superior Court seeking “an injunction to prevent the continued construction and operation of the Defendants’ commercial chicken operation,” according to the report by Douglas Now.

According to the court filing, the chicken house operation will be “the largest chicken farm east of the Mississippi River and will house up to three million birds at a time, many of which will be located within the 50 and 100-year floodplains of the Satilla River.”

The plaintiffs in this case are also concerned about how close the proposed chicken house operation will be to their properties, agricultural and business locations, as well as the impact on their health.

The residents’ motion says that this temporary injunction only prohibits the facility from “physical construction” and would not prohibit “planning or otherwise preparing.”

According to Douglas Now, the injunction says a poultry farm of this size could produce as much phosphorus as a city of 400,000 people. It also addresses other environmental claims, negative health effects, the possibility of bird flu outbreaks, diminished property values, and more.

The hearing on the matter is scheduled for Aug. 12.
