(TNND) — LinkedIn's new report highlights hot jobs, industries and locations for new college graduates as they embark on their careers in a tough labor market.

Hiring is down across most industries, LinkedIn says.

Many Americans, not just new grads, came into the year with hopes of landing a new job. But many feel stuck and frustrated by the search process.

The overall unemployment rate is holding steady at a fairly healthy 4.2%. But the unemployment rate jumps to nearly 6% for recent college grads and to nearly 7% for young workers ages 22-27.

“It is a really tough market out there,” said Andrew Seaman, the editor at large for jobs and career development at LinkedIn News.

LinkedIn crunched data from millions of member profiles and job postings to come up with lists of fastest-growing job titles for new grads, fastest-growing industries for new grads, and fastest-growing cities for new grads.

Seaman said some new grads might have to focus on their transferable skills and think outside the box if their degree doesn’t perfectly line up with the job titles employers need most.

But he said grads have plenty of power to craft their own narrative with a recruiter or hiring manager.

The LinkedIn Grad's Guide listed artificial intelligence engineer as the top fast-growing job.

No. 2 was law clerk, followed by data center technician, system engineer, financial planning and analysis specialist, business development representative, administrative analyst, product associate, service desk specialist, and clinician.

The fastest-growing industries for new grads were construction; utilities; oil, gas and mining; financial services; wholesale; entertainment providers; administrative and support services; real estate; professional services; and education.

Seaman said there’s a fair amount of crossover between the hot job titles and the hot industries.

“I think there is quite a bit of overlap in the industries, but also every industry from health care to construction to retail is going to be looking for AI engineers, data center technicians, other engineers, and then obviously business development,” he said.

Many companies are looking for ways to leverage AI with their proprietary data to improve services or offer new ones.

And a lot of companies need business and analysis folks who can help them stretch their resources.

The top industry for new grads, construction, is prime for more openings as workers reach retirement age, Seaman said.

And he said construction companies got a boost from the big infrastructure spending bill a few years ago.

Seaman said younger professionals appear willing to forgo an office gig for one that might not be “swinging a hammer” but still requires them to be out on location.

Tucson in Arizona was LinkedIn’s fastest-growing city for new grads.

Tucson was followed by Savannah, Georgia; Tallahassee, Florida; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Dallas; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Tulsa, Oklahoma; San Antonio; Houston; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Seaman noted that a lot of those cities fall within the Sun Belt, where weather might favor both lifestyle for workers and core functions of some of the top industries.

Some new grads will have to shake loose of the idea that they can do only one job to “find kind of a new home in the workforce,” Seaman said.

Identify and learn to sell your transferable skills.

Seaman said grads might have more leeway, because they’re typically going after entry-level jobs.

Some grads might find it hard to land a full-time job right out of college.

Seaman recommended embracing contract and freelance roles that can give you added experience and perhaps the footing needed to take the next step.

He said recruiters are often open-minded to an imperfect fit as far as experience or education if the applicant can make the case how they would benefit the company.

Seaman said showing excitement for a job opportunity is key when speaking with a recruiter.

“I think that is the part that people sometimes forget,” Seaman said. “They go into a job interview, and they're just sort of going through the motions or they play hard to get. But if you come with excitement for the role, and then you could sort of show them maybe what they didn't consider, I think that is going to win them over.”
