LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - Lowndes County is kicking off several celebrations this week as the countdown to the county’s 200th birthday approaches.

The county’s bicentennial birthday is Tuesday, Dec. 23, according to a social media post from the local government on Monday.

“Join us for cake and ice cream, a special presentation by Lowndes County Leadership, festive entertainment, and a community gathering honoring our shared past and bright future,” the county wrote in its post.

Events

• Monday, Dec. 15 through Wednesday, Dec. 17: As part of the county’s bicentennial, architectural historian Dr. Alfred Willis is expected to present a free three-part “Two Centuries of Architecture in Lowndes County, Georgia” lecture series on the ”on the evolution of local architecture from 1825 to 2025″ each day at 5:30 p.m., according to the county.
  • Part I: 1825–1885: From Shelter to Sophistication
  • Part II: 1885-1945: Celebrating the New South, Building a Modern South
  • Part III: 1945-2025: Modernist Achivements, Post-Modernist Alternatives
• Saturday, Dec. 20: From 11 to 4 p.m., the Citrus Fest Extravaganza will kick off, celebrating Christmas and citrus season with local vendors in attendance at the historic Lowndes County Courthouse lawn, located at 100 East Central Avenue.
• Tuesday, Dec. 23: From 3 to 6 p.m. at the historic Lowndes County Courthouse lawn, county officials are expected to hold a special presentation with entertainment, a hot chocolate bar, Santa and more in attendance in celebration of the county’s 200th birthday.
