ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man was arrested on Saturday morning for allegedly damaging property at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, Atlanta police said.
Officers were called to the center in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood at around 4:30 a.m., where they found a man urinating in the reflective pool. He was also seen stomping on the Eternal Flame, which represents King Jr.’s “Beloved Community” vision of world peace and equality, police said.

Brent Jones, 26, faces charges of second-degree criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, public indecency and obstruction of law enforcement. He will be taken to Fulton County Jail, police said.
A statement from the King Center read:
“The King Center is aware of a minor incident that occurred near the Eternal Flame. While there was minimal damage to the Eternal Flame and the surrounding area, The King Center remains fully open to visitors. The Eternal Flame still burns with love, and we continue to welcome everyone with open arms and gratitude for the incredible support of our beloved community. The dream lives on.”
Mitch Blaylock was visiting with his mom when he noticed the vandalism.
“We were so heartbroken that at any memorial of any kind, that somebody could choose chaos over community, especially at Martin Luther King and Mrs. King’s grave,” Blaylock said.
Kaila Tachie-Menson visited the center later in the day and was shocked to hear it was vandalized.
“I actually believe in our history and I love the fact that we have a center. We have something we can actually come to and again, continue to bring the legacy, continue to bring the posterity to the land,” she said.
