(TNND) — President Donald Trump hailed the peace deal he brokered between Israel and Hamas on Monday as "an unprecedented achievement."
Welcomed warmly during a trip to Israel, Trump said his plan will lead to the disarmament of Hamas and the security of Israel.
“You’ve won,” Trump said in an address to the Knesset, Israel's house of representatives. “Now it is time to translate these victories against terrorists on the battlefield into the ultimate prize of peace and prosperity for the entire Middle East."
The living hostages were released by Hamas, and Trump continued his Middle East trip with a stop in Egypt for a peace summit with more than 20 countries.
The first phase of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan was underway, with a surge of humanitarian aid to Gaza and a partial pullback by Israeli forces.
Agreement on Gaza’s postwar governance remained up in the air.
But reaction was rolling in across social media to the first steps toward peace in Gaza.
Trump shared a quote that framed the peace deal as “the greatest diplomatic achievement in the Middle East since the founding of the state of Israel."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared an artist rendering of him with Trump and the words “peace through strength."
Palestinian government officials last Thursday posted a video of children celebrating with the words, “The sounds of bombs have fallen silent. In their place — cries of relief, laughter, and the rhythm of life returning. Gaza celebrates a #ceasefire after 734 days of #genocide."
Former President Barack Obama applauded the step towards peace, writing, “After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight."
House Speaker Mike Johnson proclaimed “the historic dawn of a new Middle East.”
Trump’s secretary of state, Marco Rubio, thanked his boss for his “unwavering commitment to peace. The world is ... safer because of your leadership."
French President Emmanuel Macron said the hostage releases offer “renewed hope for peace – for Israel, for Gaza, and for the entire region."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he feels a “deep feeling of relief as hostages are released today.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote, “When peace is achieved for one part of the world, it brings more hope for peace in other regions where life is still under threat. In Ukraine, we welcome all the efforts that have led to today’s outcome for the Middle East. The hostages have been freed, and the war in Gaza is coming to an end. This is truly an extraordinary event."
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the release of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
“I am profoundly relieved that they have regained their freedom & will soon be reunited with their loved ones after the immense suffering they have endured,” he wrote. “I reiterate my call for the release of the remains of the deceased hostages. I urge all parties to build on this momentum & to honor their commitments under the ceasefire to end the nightmare in Gaza. The @UN is working to support all efforts to end the conflict in Gaza & alleviate the suffering of civilians.”
