AXSON, Ga. (WALB) - Atkinson County firefighters have been fighting an extraordinary number of wildfires across Minchew Road in Axson, Georgia. Nine separate fires erupted in the area, prompting crews to request mutual aid from neighboring counties. Despite the scale of the incident, no homes have been lost, and no injuries have been reported.

A major wildfire event unfolded Saturday in Atkinson County as firefighters battled multiple blazes simultaneously on Minchew Road near Axson, Georgia.

Atkinson County Fire crews responded to nine separate fires burning in the area. The scale of the incident quickly overwhelmed local resources, forcing officials to request mutual aid from neighboring jurisdictions.

Ware County Fire Department and Berrien County Fire Department responded to assist with firefighting efforts. According to the Atkinson County Emergency Management and Fire Department, crews are grateful for the rapid response and assistance from their neighboring agencies.

“This overwhelmed the Local resources and Mutual Aid was requested,” the department said in a statement. “Ware County Fire along with Berrien County Fire responded and provided assistance. We are very appreciative of their assistance.”

As of the latest update, the fires remain active and burning across the area. Local fire departments and Georgia Forestry Commission personnel remain on scene working to contain and mitigate the blazes.

The incident has already left its mark on the community beyond the fires themselves. A tree fell across a power line during firefighting operations, causing a power outage affecting residents in the area, including those on Wood Duck Road.

Despite the severity of the incident, authorities have reported no injuries at this time, and critically, no homes have been lost in the fires.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation. Community members have speculated about the origin, with some reporting hearing that a truck pulling a grill may have been involved, though officials have not confirmed the cause.
