ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Mexican national has been sentenced to 71 months in prison for trafficking guns from Georgia to Mexico, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The DOJ said Edson Aregullin, 47, trafficked more than 150 guns from Georgia to Mexico. Aregullin used money from a buyer in Mexico to buy guns from gun stores in North Georgia, including 9mm pistols and AR-style rifles. The guns were then taken to Mexico.

According to the DOJ, the guns were later tied to violent crimes committed in Mexico. A .223 caliber rifle purchased by Aregullin was tied to a 2022 shooting that killed eight people and injured four more.

Aregullin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic in firearms, three counts of trafficking in firearms, and three counts of false statements to a federal firearms licensee. He was sentenced to 71 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release.
