MINNEAPOLIS (TNND) — The man accused of killing Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and seriously wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment hearing on Thursday.
Vance Boelter, 58, was indicted on July 15 on six counts of murder, stalking and firearm violations. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, but that decision is months away and will be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
During his indictment, prosecutors released a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel in which Boelter said that Democratic Gov. Tim Walz selected him to kill Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Tina Smith, D-MN, and Amy Klobuchar, D-MN.
"Recently I was approached about a project that Tim Walz wanted done, and [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] Keith was also aware of the project," the letter stated. "Tim wanted me to kill Amy Klobushar and Tina [REDACTED]. Tim wants to be a senator and he doesn't trust. [REDACTED] to retire as planned and thinks she is going to stay on at the last minute."
The handwritten letter was uncovered in Boelter's abandoned vehicle by authorities along with a list of lawmakers, deemed to be likely targets. Authorities arrested Boelter in a remote area following a two-day manhunt.
Boelter also confessed to being the "shooter at large" and said that he "was trained by U.S. Military people off the books starting in college."
The self-described Christian and Trump supporter shared in an interview with the New York Post that the attacks weren't motivated by his anti-abortion views or support of Trump, refusing to share a motive for the attack.
“You are fishing and I can’t talk about my case. I'll say it didn’t involve either the Trump stuff or pro-life,” Boelter wrote in a message to the newspaper via the jail’s messaging system.
Sen. John Hoffman was released from the hospital last month after allegedly being shot nine times by Boelter.
Boelter was disguised as a police officer and driving a fake patrol car on June 14 when he went to the Hoffmans' home in Champlin, according to prosecutors.
He later went to the Hortmans' home, shooting and killing them both, authorities said. The family's rescue dog, Gilbert, was also shot and had to be euthanized.
Boelter surrendered near his home the night of June 15 after what authorities called the largest search in Minnesota history.
