THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) -Despite the heat, more than 1,000 people gathered in Thomasville on Saturday for the Juneteenth Celebration and Freedom Fest, a day focused on history, community, and fun for all ages.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed live music, hundreds of vendors, a career fair, a car show, and outdoor activities.
Organizers say the celebration is about honoring the past while bringing the community together to help build a better future.
“We are reminding ourselves of what happened in the 1865 and how we can better prepare ourselves for the future because if you don’t know about your past you are so doomed to repeat it and so in celebrating today everyone of every race let us know we are all one human race in the grand scheme of things,” said Tangela Ross, an advisory board member with Juneteenth of Thomasville and Thomas County Foundation Inc.
The event also featured a live museum, where children created backdrops, dressed up as historical Black figures, and shared information about the people they portrayed.
