ACREE, Ga. (WALB) — A Worth County mother says she’s thankful her family is safe after a large tree crashed through her home during storms Thursday morning, destroying the room of one of her children who had just gotten onto the school bus.

Alex Evans said the tree fell at her home on Birch Road in Acree just minutes after she put her two older children on the bus. Her husband was already at work. Evans and her youngest child, a 2-year-old, were inside the house when the storm intensified.

Evans said she first noticed the weather changing around 6:40 a.m., when she heard what she described as a loud, whistling wind.

“I never heard a tornado siren,” she said.

About 6:50 a.m., Evans said the power went out. Moments later, she heard a loud boom as the tree came down — about 25 feet from where she had been inside the home.

Evans said she fell to the ground before grabbing her toddler and moving into the hallway.

Evans said the storm left windows shattered, the roof destroyed, and the home’s foundation shifted.

In the neighborhood, other residents and crews, including the Georgia Forestry Commission, worked to clear downed trees and debris from the roadway.
