Description

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A recent study comparing vehicle theft trends in Georgia and Alabama shows the states share similar patterns when it comes to which cars thieves target most.

Compare the Market reports that in Georgia, the most frequently stolen vehicles, listed in order from most stolen, are:

  • Ford pickup
  • Dodge Charger
  • Chevrolet pickup

Georgia recorded 197 thefts per 100,000 residents, ranking 31st nationwide.

In Alabama, the most frequently stolen vehicles, also ranked from most stolen to least stolen, are:

  • Ford pickup
  • Chevrolet pickup
  • Dodge Charger

Alabama saw 190 thefts per 100,000 people, placing the state at 33rd in the country.

Security experts recommend several steps to reduce the risk of theft, including locking vehicles, parking in well-lit areas, and avoiding leaving valuables visible inside the car. Tools like steering wheel locks, upgraded alarms, immobilizers, and GPS trackers can offer additional security.

“Understanding which vehicles are most at risk is the first step in protecting your own,” said Adrian Taylor, executive general manager of General Insurance. “By combining smart security habits with the right car insurance cover, you can significantly reduce both the likelihood and impact of having your car stolen.”

Simple oversights, such as leaving a car running unattended or storing a spare key inside, remain common factors in thefts.

“Car theft continues to impact motorists, particularly those driving popular and older vehicles,” Taylor added. “Simple security measures such as steering wheel locks, alarms, and GPS tracking devices can significantly reduce the risk of theft.”

The study also found that Colorado topped the national list, reporting 777 vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents.
