Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - WALB has reached out to several county officials across South Georgia to gather updates on storm damage after Helene.

The counties below are ones that WALB has not been able to have a foot on the ground for.

There are some counties that we have not yet heard back from. We will continue to provide updates.

Atkinson County

Widespread damage, on a scale they’ve never seen before. 90% of roads were closed, but they’ve got it down to about 30% of the roads that are still closed.

Pearson, Willacoochee, Axson, and Atkinson are all still out of power.

GEMA and the National Guard have been giving all the supplies, like MREs, bottled water, and tarps.

“Volunteers have been a big help, need more. Have not heard from FEMA, 48 counties have requested federal assistance. Just a day without cell service, Verizon came out a day after the storm and helped restore cell service. “We are trying to get this declared a disaster where they can get some assistance.” Parker Liles, Atkinson County Commission Chairman

Ben Hill County

Brooks County

Cook County

Irwin County

“A lot less damage still have roads blocked but crews are working. There’s going to be a drive-thru hot meal handout at the community center around 5 this evening, along with bottled water. “Brandon Fletcher, Irwin County EMA Director

Lanier County

Lanier County has a debris contract with CTC, and roads are all passable because of the contract company.

Water, MRE’s, Tarps, and Ice from 12-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at 28 S. Valdosta Hwy (Old Primary School).

Salvation Army and World Central Kitchen both on site giving out meals from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Red Cross Shelter setup at the elementary school at 92 S. Valdosta Hwy 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Most cell service has been restored across the county.

GEMA and FEMA assessment teams coming to assess the county, once that’s done, that’s when they’ll get added to individual assistance. But they’re getting state and federal public assistance
