Description

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Three families are raising concerns about supervision and safety protocols at Cox Elementary School after their children suffered injuries during school hours.

The incidents occurred between November 2024 and September 2025. Parents are questioning whether the school followed proper emergency procedures and provided adequate supervision.

In August 2025, Karson Hall had an accident with another student at Cox Elementary during music class. His mother, Megan Hall, received a call from a teacher saying he was okay, but later learned from her son that he had allegedly been hit, slammed and kicked in the face during music class where only one teacher was present.

On Sept. 18, Megan Contreras experienced a similar panic when her five-year-old son, Omar, fell off the monkey bars and was sent to the nurse.

According to the nurse slip, Omar arrived at 2:30 p.m. and was returned to class at 2:33 p.m. The note does identify that his right arm was hurting, and ice was applied. Nearly three hours later, Contreras discovered the severity of the injury.

Contreras said, “I barely pick up Omar by the arm... ‘Come here puppy,’ and he screamed like I killed him.”

X-rays at the hospital revealed Omar had shattered his elbow. Contreras said she received only one phone call that she missed from the school.

“If you have my number, my husband’s number, his grandma, my sister-in-law’s. So, there’s not just my number, there are multiples. But the principal herself looked at me and said ‘Sorry, it’s a miscommunication,’” Contreras said.

Now, Omar will need follow-up doctor visits to ensure his bone grows properly.

“My baby tells me every day, every morning ‘Momma I don’t want to go to school,’ I’m like ‘baby you have to. Mommy has to work to provide for y’all, and y’all have to go to school to get an education,’” Contreras said. “But right now he’s not learning...being at home with my kids is my safe place.”

On Nov. 13, 2024, Cox Elementary called Makayla Sellers. Her pre-K son Corey, known as CJ, had been injured by another student.

“They said ‘You’re going to have to come get CJ because he’s going to need some stiches. I’m thinking two or three stiches,’” Sellers recalled.

But what she and her husband saw when they arrived was unbelievable.

“[The other student] waited until my son got back in his spot and used his whole body and went phewww — pushed my son,” Sellers said. “He hit right at his hairline on the side of the bricks and busted his head open. So deep you could see his skull.”

According to the Colquitt County Schools Emergency Response Plan, staff should press a Centegix badge three times to initiate a response team for serious injuries, call 911 if the injury requires a medical doctor and notify the closest teacher or administrator.

“The school did not... The school did not call the ambulance. They let my son sit in the hallway,” Sellers said.

Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office said that no incident report exists from November 2024. Sellers provided a report showing the incident occurred at 7:15 a.m., during school supervision hours of 7 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

“So, after I seen the video, I withdrew my son,” Sellers said. “I said he is not stepping foot in that place because they do not protect our children.”

Following WALB’s investigations into student injuries and incidents, we asked the school district if any new protocols have been put in place or if changes have been made.

School Superintendent Dan Chappuis sent a statement saying, “the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff are top priorities in the Colquitt County School District.”
