WILLACOOCHEE, Ga. (WALB) — A standoff in Willacoochee is under review after reports say a man in crisis begged officers to shoot him during a tense encounter with police on Monday, April 13.

According to the report, officers from the Willacoochee Police Department (WPD) were dispatched to the Willacoochee Market service station following a concerning report regarding an individual who was believed to be held against her will.

Upon their arrival at the scene, an officer encountered a Caucasian male who posed a serious threat; he brandished two metal spikes and declared that any approaching officers would be required to kill him. This alarming statement raised immediate concerns for the safety of everyone present.

As the situation unfolded, the male suspect refused to comply with the officers’ clearly stated commands. Instead, he began walking toward Highway 82, indicating a desire to end his life.

Recognizing that the individual was likely experiencing a severe mental health crisis, the officers quickly opted to engage him in dialogue, employing various de-escalation techniques to encourage him to talk and to assess his state of mind.

Despite their efforts, the suspect continued to ignore their commands and moved dangerously close to the busy highway. In response to the escalating situation and the potential risk to both the individual and the public, the officers made the decision to utilize less-lethal weapons. This strategic choice was aimed at ensuring the safety of everyone involved while attempting to subdue the suspect.

Following the safe deployment of less-lethal measures, the officers successfully detained the individual without further incident. He was then transported to the hospital for an evaluation and the mental health support he needed.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the deputies of the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office for their invaluable assistance during this critical incident,” Chief of Police, Frankie Sanchez.
