THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Health officials with the Southwest Health District are urging residents to remain cautious after a rabid skunk was identified in the Boston community of Thomas County.
According to health officials, the skunk was discovered on March 8 after a resident’s dog killed the animal, which had been displaying unusual behavior. The skunk’s head was sent to the state public health laboratory for testing, and results confirmed on March 10 that the animal was positive for rabies.
Dr. Charles Ruis, District Health Director, said no humans were exposed during the incident.
“The dog that interacted with it had been vaccinated for rabies, and the owner decided to euthanize the dog to prevent future concerns,” Ruis said. “The immediate threat has been neutralized and there is no current indication of further exposure in the area.”
Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the central nervous system and can spread to humans through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly through bites or scratches. Health officials note that rabies remains a serious global health concern, causing tens of thousands of deaths worldwide each year.
Authorities are reminding residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of exposure. Public health officials recommend avoiding contact with wild or stray animals, ensuring pets are vaccinated against rabies annually, and reporting any animal bites or scratches to a doctor or public health officials immediately.
Residents who work closely with animals may also want to consider a pre-exposure rabies vaccination.
If someone is bitten or scratched by an animal, health experts advise washing the wound immediately with soap and water and seeking medical care as soon as possible. A doctor can help determine whether additional treatment, including rabies vaccination, tetanus boosters, or antibiotics, may be needed.
For more information about rabies prevention and treatment, residents are encouraged to contact their local health department or visit the Georgia Department of Public Health website.
