Description
ALBANY, GA — Unsettled conditions return to SGA Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, with rain and a possible snow mix expected before conditions clear out by Sunday afternoon. Sunday is a FIRST Alert Weather Day.
Rainfall amounts will be scattered and light for the rest of the day. Showers become more widespread overnight, and temperatures drop to the low mid-30s. Early morning, 5-6am, we will start to see the transition from rain into sleet and snow. Most models have widespread snow and sleet across SGA, with the highest accumulation up to 3 inches across the northern counties from Sumter into Dodge counties. Expect 1-2 inches of snow here in Albany, with decreasing snow totals the further southeast you go.
It will not be like last years historic January snow event. This year, the snow will not be as fluffy, which makes it hard for a lot to accumulate. Ground temperatures will likely be above freezing as well, so there will not be a lot of snow sticking to the ground. The sun will come back out with highs in the 40s on Sunday which will quicky melt any patchy areas of snow on the ground.
Any remaining water on the surface will freeze up heading into Sunday night, as temperatures drop into the mid 20s. Refreezing over roadways will be possible, but likely very isolated as cold and dry winds will likely dry up most of the water Sunday afternoon and early evening.
Looking ahead into next week, MLK Day will be chilly in the 50s. Overnight lows stay below freezing for the first half of the work week. Temperatures become more seasonably warm ending the work week.
What You Should Do:
- Be prepared for slick travel conditions Sunday morning due to the rain and snow mix
- Dress warmly for Sunday — temperatures will drop significantly
- Plan for a Hard Freeze as overnight temperatures drop into the mid 20s Sunday night and potentially Monday night
