Rain Finally Returns This Weekend - But Don’t Expect a Drought Fix

Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — After 3 weeks of dry weather, rain is finally heading back this weekend. However, while the moisture is welcome, it won’t be enough to significantly improve the area’s drought.

What to Expect This Weekend

Saturday isolated showers and storms continue through the late afternoon/evening. Rain chances die off pretty hard an hour or two after sunset. A warm and damp evening is ahead, overnight lows will be in the low 60s.

Sunday brings a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, primarily after 2pm lasting into the evening. Spotty rainfall is expected with only some areas receiving around 1/2 an inch, many locations likely will see less or none at all. Otherwise partly sunny and warm highs mid 80s.

The Fog Factor: Sunday Morning Commute

Another round of Fog is likely in the morning on Sunday, likely eased up by mid-late morning.

Rainfall Totals: Modest at Best

While any rain is welcome after the prolonged dry spell, expect modest totals. Most areas will see less than an inch of rain this weekend. The National Weather Service notes that although these amounts are appreciated, they will do very little to alleviate the ongoing drought affecting the region.

The Bigger Picture: Drought Persists

SGA has experienced an exceptional drought with rainfall deficits of 8 to 16+ inches since October 2025. This weekend’s rain, while beneficial, is not a drought-buster. More rainfall is in the forecast though as we progress through next week, especially Wednesday-Saturday. It won’t bust the drought, but it will certainly help.

Looking Ahead: Warming Trend Returns

After Saturday’s showers clear, temperatures climb back into the mid 80s on Sunday and continue near average mid 80s with milder lows in the low-mid 60s.

What You Should Do

  • Saturday/Sunday: Keep an umbrella handy. Rain chances increase in the afternoon and linger into early evening.
  • Long-term: Continue water conservation efforts.
