BRENHAM, Texas (KEYE) — Rescue crews in Texas are searching for a 10-year-old girl who was swept away by rapidly rising floodwaters in Brenham Monday afternoon.
The City of Brenham Fire Department, along with approximately 12 supporting agencies, used drones with thermal imaging and dogs to try to find the girl as heavy thunderstorms moved through the area.
"With more severe weather anticipated, we ask the community to keep everyone involved in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time," the department said in a social media post.
The National Weather Service in Houston reported the next round of severe storms could bring as much as 6 inches of rain.
The fire department, Washington County EMS, and several other agencies responded to the scene near Fireman’s Park for a swift water rescue earlier in the day.
Several rescue attempts were made by bystanders, and Brenham Police Department officers also attempted a rescue. One officer was swept away by the water but was rescued downstream and treated by EMS.
The severe flooding comes after storms drenched southern Oklahoma and northern Texas last week.
