A local staple in downtown Americus is marking a major milestone with a clean bill of health.

Sweet Georgia earned a perfect score of 100 on its latest routine food service inspection, coinciding with the restaurant’s 15th anniversary since opening its doors in 2011.

Owner Lee Harris, who brings roughly three decades of restaurant industry experience to the kitchen, said maintaining strict sanitary standards is fundamental to running a successful food service operation.

“We kind of pride ourselves on serving quality food and doing what we can to keep the place clean and up to standards,” Harris said. “Very early on I was taught by a chef I worked for: don’t have an antagonistic relationship with the health inspector. They’re here to help, and we should be doing our job correctly anyway.”

Harris noted that Sweet Georgia prepares as much as possible from scratch in small batches, roasting turkey daily for its top-selling sandwich, mixing fresh chicken salad, and prepping produce daily.

“If we make somebody sick, we’re out of business,” Harris said. “It benefits us as well as the general public to be doing the best we can to serve quality, clean, sanitary food.”

Formerly known as Sweet Georgia Bakery and Cafe, the establishment recently closed for about a month to undergo renovations and reorganize its floor plan. The update also reflects an evolving business model: phasing out traditional bakery cases filled with pound cakes to concentrate on specialty savory offerings and popular dinner features.

Among the newest staples are specialty pan pizzas, made using a light, crispy modified focaccia dough. The 9-by-9-inch pies debuted as occasional specials before quickly selling out.

“Last Friday night, we sold out in the first hour,” Harris said. “Kind of freeing up my time from baking pound cakes to doing pizzas definitely seems to be helping the business grow, and people love it.”

Sweet Georgia is also partnering with the community for the annual Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Day of Giving, donating a portion of sales to the GSW Foundation while offering pizza specials.
