ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Mothers covered by Georgia Medicaid can now receive lactation services through telehealth under a new statewide policy expansion.

The change allows eligible mothers to access prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding education, lactation consulting and other postpartum support remotely from their homes.

Aeroflow Health is one of the companies that worked with the state to help advance the policy change.

A representative with Aeroflow Health, Amanda Minimi, said the expansion could serve as a step toward broader maternal health support in Georgia.

Minimi notes that Medicaid covers about 45% of births in Georgia, according to advocates involved in the policy effort. Advocates added that many high-risk pregnancies occur among Medicaid recipients.

Minimi said the expansion of access to virtual lactation care could help improve breastfeeding rates across the state. She noted fewer than 30% of Georgia mothers breastfeed through six months, often because of limited access to support and resources.

The expansion is reportedly designed to improve access to care for mothers in rural and underserved areas who may face barriers to in-person appointments, including transportation, childcare and travel costs.
