WASHINGTON (TNND) — Senate Republicans are facing a marathon voting session on Monday as they work to pass President Donald Trump's budget bill, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” and meet the Fourth of July deadline.
Senators will convene at 9 a.m. for a "vote-a-rama," allowing them to offer as many amendments to the bill as they would like before a final vote.
The hours-long voting session was supposed to start overnight, but GOP leaders pushed for a morning start after Senate clerks had to read all 940 pages of the bill, which lasted nearly 16 hours.
“The debate and eventually voting on the ‘big, beautiful bill.’ has begun. Hallelujah. It’s taken a while for us to get there,” Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham said on Sunday. “I’ve worked a long time with my colleagues to get to where we are today.”
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the “hardest choices" for Republicans are still to come. His side plans to bring “amendment after amendment after amendment to the floor, so Republicans can defend their billionaire tax cuts and so they can try to explain their massive cuts to Medicaid to people back home.”
Not all GOP lawmakers are on board with proposals to cut spending on Medicaid, food stamps and other programs to cover the cost of Trump’s tax breaks.
Trump lashed out against the holdout GOP lawmakers, even threatening to campaign against one Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who had said he could not support the bill because of Medicaid cuts that could leave many in his state without health care. An analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the Senate version of the bill would increase the number of people without health insurance by 11.8 million in 2034.
Tillis and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., voted “no.”
Tillis said on Sunday that he will not be seeking reelection, vacating a seat that creates a political opportunity for Democrats in the 2026 midterm election in a state that has long been a battleground. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the Senate.
