ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A 16-year-old driver crashed into a pond off Cordele Road while practicing behind the wheel with her grandfather in the car.

According to the Albany Police Department (APD), the crash happened at a property along Cordele Road near Walmart. The teen driver missed a turn, overcorrected and crashed through a gate before the car plunged into a nearby holding pond, according to the official accident report.

Cell phone video captured the moments after the crash, showing the teen and her grandfather, Calvin Jones Jr., safely outside the vehicle as they watched it slowly sink beneath the water.

“Don’t panic. Don’t panic. We got to get out,” Jones said he told his granddaughter as the car went into the water.

Everyone inside the car escaped safely. No injuries were reported.

‘She gotta learn’

Jones said a man helped them get up on the bank after they escaped the sinking vehicle.

Despite the close call, Jones said his granddaughter needs to keep driving.

“She gotta learn,” Jones said. “She gotta tear a couple of them up to get there. I’m tired of taking them to the store.”

The grandfather’s candid reaction has gone viral on social media.

The teen is working toward getting her driver’s license. Jones said he has full coverage insurance on the vehicle and that police told him they would not charge his granddaughter.

A witness, Karlos Price was in the area at the time and recorded video of the aftermath. Price said they’re just happy no one got hurt.
