FORT PIERCE, Fla. (WPEC) — Members of the Sikh community from across the Country and locally are gathering outside the St. Lucie County Jail on Thursday afternoon to honor the victims of a deadly crash and call for a fair trial for the driver accused in the case.

Sikhs For Justice, an international advocacy group, announced that community members will take part in a special Sikh prayer, known as an Ardas.

Leaders of the organization say the vigil is meant to stand in solidarity with the families of three people killed in the crash and to show support for Harjinder Singh, the truck driver being held in custody.

Investigators say Singh was attempting to make an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike earlier this month when his tractor-trailer blocked all lanes of traffic. A minivan slammed into the trailer, killing everyone inside.

The victims were identified as 30-year-old Herby Dufresne of Florida City, 37-year-old Faniola Joseph of Pompano Beach, and 54-year-old Rodrique Dor of Miami.

A human rights lawyer with ‘Sikhs For Justice’ sat down with Singh at the jail earlier this week.

“Harjinder’s case is one of tragic misjudgment and not of an intentional or malicious act,” said Gurpatwant Pannun, an attorney for Sikhs For Justice.

The attorney held a press conference shortly after their conversation and shared that he could tell Singh was grieving and under mental distress.

“To portray him as a malicious killer would be very unfair and wrong,” said Pannun.

While Pannun is not representing Singh in court, he said the organization Sikhs For Justice will provide $100,000 in financial support to the victims’ families.

Singh’s case has drawn attention from Sikh communities nationwide, many of whom are traveling to Fort Pierce to take part in the vigil. The prayer vigil will start at 1:30 p.m. at the St.Lucie County Jail on North Rock Road in Fort Pierce.
