SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) -[UPDATE 3/19 @7:18 AM] - All Sumter Schools will be closed today, according to Sumter County Schools.
[ORGINIAL 3/19 @7:00 AM] - Classes are canceled today for students at Sumter County Primary School after officials reported a smoke-related issue tied to an apparent electrical fire.
In a message shared with parents and guardians, school leaders announced that all Pre-K through 1st grade students will not attend school out of an abundance of caution. The decision comes after smoke from an external source impacted the building, raising safety concerns.
Sumter County Sheriff Eric Bryant confirmed there was an electrical fire at one of the primary school facilities. While details remain limited, authorities say the situation prompted immediate action to ensure student safety.
Despite the cancellation for students, teachers are still required to report by 9 a.m. to the high school.
At this time, no injuries have been reported, and officials have not released further details about the extent of the damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
