ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlantans are looking forward to lower prices at the pump as a bill that would provide some help works its way through the Georgia legislature.
“I hope something is done soon, because it gets worse and worse as the days go by,” driver Anthony Dabney said. “Right now, affordability is just not even a term that we can use because everything is high.”
The Georgia House on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed an amendment that would suspend the state gas tax for 60 days.
Only four representatives voted against amending House Bill 1199, which had previously passed the House and Senate in an earlier form. The new version now heads back to the Senate.
State Rep. John Carson, R-Marietta, moved to add the amendment. “I think this is going to give much-needed relief to Georgians sooner rather than later,” he said.
Driver Tom McGee told Atlanta News First that every little bit counts.
“Something’s just got to give,” he said. “It’s hard enough living just the daily: grocery, water, air, gas — it’s hard enough. Give us a break on one end. It would be greatly appreciated across the board.”
Georgia drivers would pay about 33 cents less per gallon if the measure passes the Senate and is approved by Gov. Brian Kemp.
“For some, it could mean paying all of your bills, right?” driver Chloe Scott said.
Although Kemp has suspended the gas tax three times before, he has shown reluctance this time.
“We’re just going to continue to watch the market,” he said earlier this month, “but we also won’t be overreacting to something that could be a short-term blip.”
Atlanta News First reached out to the governor’s office on Wednesday to see whether he supports the new amendment. In response, a spokesperson sent the following statement:
“The Governor is always actively working to find ways to support hardworking Georgians, including this step alongside the legislature to keep more money in their pockets. This follows the passage of a fourth tax refund and builds on multiple previous suspensions of the state gas tax, saving families over $10 billion since 2021.”
