Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -

OVERVIEW - A First Alert Weather Day is declared for early Sunday morning until noon Sunday. Rain will start to transition into a wintry mix and snow at 5-6am, potentially bringing a couple hours of snow showers to much of SGA. Skies clear in the afternoon and dry up most of the snow/liquid, but a few isolated areas may not dry up completely. Temperatures dropping into the 20s Sunday night will freeze any lingering liquid on the surface, which could make for some slippery spots on the road Monday morning. A second First Alert Weather Day has been declared for Sunday night - Monday morning as a result.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY - Widespread, light showers will continue for much of SGA through out your evening and overnight hours. Rain will transition into wintry mix and snow early in the morning (5-6am) over the western counties, and that transition line will steadily make its way east through Sunday morning. That transition line will likely reach Albany by 7-8am, leaving us with a couple hours of wet snow.

Highest snow totals, up to 3 inches, look to be just north of Albany in Sumter, Dooly, Crisp, Wilcox, and Dodge counties. The more SE you go in SGA, the less snow you will see. Widespread snowfall is likely everywhere except the Florida-Georgia border counties. The far SE counties will likely only see a cold rain. The Albany area will likely pick up 1-2″ of snowfall.

This event is not comparable to our historic snowfall last year, so do not expect similar outcomes. The snow will be wet, meaning it will likely turn to slush on the ground with isolated areas seeing light accumulation. Last year saw a once in a lifetime dry and fluffy snow in SGA which caused accumulations to be near double digits.

Snow/Rain moves out right after lunch time, leaving us sunny and windy in the afternoon with highs in the 40s. This will dry up most of the snow and liquid on the ground, but potentially not all of it. Temperatures drop into the 20s Sunday night, which will freeze any lingering liquid on the ground. Roads could have some slick spots on them Monday morning, so be careful on your morning commute. A Hard Freeze will be possible for some areas, so make sure to drip your pipes.

WORK WEEK - Freezing temperatures stay with us overnight until Thursday. Afternoon highs steadily warm into the 60s by Thursday. Rain chances are low through the work week. Unseasonably warm temperatures end the work week.
