ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Residents at Cedar Avenue Apartments say they are living with roach infestations, broken appliances and other problems while management refuse to address their concerns.
The HUD-subsidized complex limits rent to 30% of residents’ gross income, but tenants say they feel overlooked because of their low payments.
“I don’t know how to explain it. Just this is a bad year for me, 25. I’m having a very hard time living here. They don’t want to fix anything,” said Farnorris Walker, who has lived in his apartment for four years.
Walker said his home has multiple problems, including issues with lights and a broken gas stove and refrigerator that have persisted for two weeks. With Thanksgiving approaching, he said he has to keep his turkey in the sink with a bag of ice.
Whitley Wilkerson, who lives in the complex with her three children, said her apartment has holes in floors and water leaks. She said her worst problem is a roach infestation.
“It’s like a safety hazard my kids are constantly sick and they have asthma so it’s like an emotional distress problem for me because I have to deal with the emotional stress that they are going through because kids are not going to tell you how they feel you have to actually pay attention to them that way you know what’s going on with them it’s like you reach out to them and where’s the concern,” Wilkerson said.
WALB attempted to contact the property office by phone and in-person visits and received no response.
City Commissioner Diana Brown has advocated for residents for months, hosting trash pickups and calling code enforcement.
“Human rights, we got human rights. Housing is a human right fair and decent housing is a human right. We got to start holding these landlords accountable. I don’t care who you are. We are sick and tired of this property manager. We don’t care who you are,” Brown said.
The City of Albany issued a subpoena calling on residents to appear in Albany Municipal Court on Monday for a hearing involving the property manager.
