SOUTH GEORGIA, (WALB) — Emergency agencies and communities across Southwest Georgia are mourning the loss of two longtime first responders who dedicated decades of their lives to protecting the public.

This weekend, both the Albany Police Department and the City of Cuthbert announced the passing of two veteran leaders: Albany Police Sergeant Paul Guhl and Cuthbert Fire Chief Gregory Fairbanks.

Remembering Cuthbert Fire Chief Gregory Fairbanks

In Randolph County, the City of Cuthbert announced that Fire Chief Gregory Fairbanks passed away on Saturday, September 12.

Chief Fairbanks gave more than 30 years of service to the Cuthbert Fire Department, rising through the ranks to lead firefighting and rescue operations across the city and county. City leaders praised his courage, faith, and leadership, stating his decades of devotion made an indelible impact on the safety and well-being of the community.

Condolences poured in from neighboring emergency response agencies throughout the region. The Dawson Police Department extended heartfelt sympathy to Fairbanks’ wife, Jennifer Fairbanks, and his brother, Randolph County Sheriff Eddie Fairbanks, as well as his extended family and the firefighters under his command.

“Chief Fairbanks was far more than a public servant. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a brother, a leader, and a faithful servant of God whose life reflected service, commitment, and compassion for others,” Dawson Police said in a statement. “His passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of Jennifer and his family, the firefighters who served under his leadership, and the community he faithfully protected.”

Remembering Albany Police Sergeant Paul Guhl

In Dougherty County, the Albany Police Department announced Sunday that Sergeant Paul Guhl passed away after faithfully serving the city for more than 23 years.

Sgt. Guhl was a seasoned law enforcement officer who most recently served in the department’s Special Operations division and played a vital role on APD’s drone team.

“Sgt. Guhl’s years of service, leadership, and commitment have left a lasting impact on the Albany Police Department and the community,” APD shared in a statement. “His presence will be deeply missed by the men and women who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.”

Department leaders asked the South Georgia community to keep Sgt. Guhl’s family, friends, and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Funeral and memorial arrangements for both Chief Fairbanks and Sgt. Guhl have not yet been announced.
