ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Tifton Fire Department (TFD) provided reminders and safety tips on space heater safety.
Experts say that space heaters are the leading cause of home fires during the cold months. Here are a few tips to avoid a house fire, according to VFD:
- Keep a 3-foot kid free zone
- Keep items at least three feet away
- Never use a stove or oven to heat your home

According to the American Red Cross, the House Fire Campaign has been educating families about house fire safety since 2014, with 255 people being in Georgia.
The organization also advises home owners to never leave space heaters unattended, always plug them into direct outlets and place them on a hard, level surface.
This season, WALB has covered several space heater-related stories. Fire departments across South Georgia have highlighted important tips for safe operation and the risks associated with improper use, helping residents make informed decisions about heating their homes.
