Description
LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) — A man was charged with obstruction after he fled from Leesburg Police Department (LPD) officers on the property of Twin Oaks Elementary School. The school was placed on lockdown due to the incident on Thursday, April 16, LPD said.
LPD Chief Christopher Prokesh confirmed that no students or staff were harmed in this incident.
Chief Prokesh said that the man’s sister called Albany Police to report that the man was on the way to Twin Oaks Elementary School in Leesburg. LPD was notified and dispatched there.
At about noon, a man came to the school trying to make contact with his girlfriend, who reportedly works in the cafeteria there. When he arrived at the front office, the man spoke with administration but was stopped by police when he tried to leave the building, LPD said.
The man then ran from officials and got in his car, starting a brief chase, according to Chief Prokesh.
Less than 100 feet from the school, the man’s vehicle was stopped by the LPD.
Officials said they found no weapons inside the man’s vehicle.
LPD served the man with a mental evaluation and charged him with obstruction, Chief Prokesh said.
Police said that while no students or staff were injured in this incident, the man was making threatening remarks to himself.
Correction: In a previous version of this story, WALB reported that Twin Oaks Elementary School had been placed on lockdown. We have since learned that is not true; however, Lee County Middle School (West) and Kinchafoonee Primary School were placed on lockdown.
