ASHBURN, Ga. (WALB) — A Turner County High School senior walked across an improvised “stage” in a family hospice room months before her classmates, fulfilling what her family said was her terminally ill mother’s final wish.

Charlette Dixon, who was battling cancer and had been told she had only weeks to live, wanted to see her daughter, Zion Dixon, graduate. So, school leaders organized a private graduation ceremony on Feb. 12 at Dixon’s home while she was receiving hospice care, allowing Zion to receive her diploma early.

Turner County’s principal, Jason Clark, said he received a call from a family member asking if the school could support the family. He said he immediately contacted Superintendent Ray, who supported the idea.

“After we finished the ceremony, we got right there at her bedside. We spoke to her and we just told her Zion is a wonderful student,” Clark said. “The mom replied by saying, ‘Thank you.’ And she said it multiple times. And she was overjoyed.”

The family said the ceremony included many of the same touches as a traditional graduation, including the official presentation of the diploma, but in a quieter setting surrounded by family and school staff.

Charlette Dixon was known for her humor and kindness. She died March 28, about a month after the private ceremony. Her sister, Diannah Stafford, said the family will care for Zion.

“[Charlette] would say thank you to the school,” Stafford said when asked about her sister’s emotions. “She would say, ‘My baby made it. I know she was going to make it. My baby made it. And I love my baby.’”

The private ceremony had many people in a small, quiet room, but Zion Dixon said it meant everything for her mother to see her receive her diploma.

“The emotions were mixed emotions,” she said. “Of course, I was happy for her to see that because that’s what she really wanted to see. It was a lot at the time. It was also very sad. But we still made it happen for her, so that’s all I was happy about.”

Dixon also walked alongside her Turner County High School classmates during the formal graduation in May. She also graduated top 10 in her class, the family said.

The 2026 graduate said she will follow in her mother’s footsteps, pursuing a degree in nursing. She will attend Valdosta State University in the fall.
