TERRELL COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Meet Emma Lane, a senior on the Terrell Academy Softball Team. While many athletes dream of making varsity as a freshman, Lane achieved this remarkable feat in 8th grade, solidifying her role as the starting catcher for Terrell Academy ever since.
As a catcher, Lane is the eyes and ears of the defense, and the only player with a full view of the field. This unique position comes with the significant responsibility of leading her teammates, a role she embraces with unwavering focus. Her coaches say she’s never caught taking a play off, which is a testament to her dedication and leadership.
“I’ve been catching since I was eight,” Lane shared. “I started softball when I was eight, but I have been playing baseball since I was four. I like being a catcher because I feel like I’m in control. I get to make a lot of plays, and I get to be in almost every single play and every single strikeout. I just like being a leader and knowing I can help my teammates out and telling them where to go with the ball and where the next play is.”
Looking ahead, the senior backstop is set to embark on her collegiate journey as a West Georgia Wolf. Lane said she’s committed to spending her next four years there, not just on the field, but also in the classroom. Lane has chosen to major in Health and Community Wellness, with aspirations of becoming an occupational therapist after graduation and further studies in grad school.
“I committed to West Georgia last November, and I am signing this November,” Lane said. “Coach [Kristy] Burton, I love her. She’s the head coach there. Coach [Ivey] Kane is the assistant. They’re both just great coaches. They’re very faith-based, and I like that because I have a strong relationship with Jesus. I wanted to continue that through my college, and I didn’t want to stray away from that because some people do during their college experience.”
According to her coaches, Lane’s relentless work ethic shines through both on and off the field. This dedication is precisely why she is being honored with this week’s award. Her infectious energy and unwavering can-do attitude resonate throughout the entire team, inspiring her teammates to strive for their best.
Olivia Rogers, Assistant Coach for the Terrell Academy Eagles, praises Lane’s influence.
“She’s good at coaching the younger ones,” Rogers said. “She’s just set an example about how hard work and training and constant work will better her skills. She’s been a great leader for our team this year.”
Lane truly embodies the spirit of a scholar-athlete, excelling in her sport, planning for a bright academic future and inspiring those around her with her leadership and dedication. Congratulations, Emma!
