WORTH COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The “bookgirl” is in town and she’s going door-to-door in hopes of enhancing South Georgia education by supplying families with supplemental resources.
21-year-old Emory Ontko is a Texas native who is part of an internship program under Southwestern Advantage. For the next few weeks, she will be going door to door speaking with families and offering them supplemental packets to assist with their child’s education.
“The southern hospitality is through the roof. People are so kind. Even if they aren’t interested in what I have, everyone has been beyond nice. I haven’t had a single person ever yell at me. I don’t know, it’s just been really positive,” said Ontko.
These supplemental education resources consist of packets, applications, and websites that grow alongside the children from Pre-K up until 12th grade. The families she spoke with say they appreciate these supplements because schools in South Georgia aren’t giving kids the resources they need.
“So, we have our early learning library. These are books that are meant to push their reading levels. We start with basic foundations like colors, words, and shapes, going all the way up to a fifth-grade reading level with project-based books. What most families have been getting goes over math, reading, writing, and science from kindergarten until they graduate high school,” said Ontko.
A lot of parents are telling her that students don’t receive textbooks anymore, and with a new way of learning straying away from Common Core, parents say they are having difficulty keeping up with their child’s studies and providing assistance when needed.
“It’s essentially an example packet. It will show the way you and I were taught to do multiplication versus how the kids are now taught to do multiplication. Breaking it down, step by step by step,” said Ontko.
She is also selling religious supplements to help break down the Bible for children.
