CHICAGO (TNND) — President Donald Trump called Chicago the "murder capital of the world" and said it is the "worst and most dangerous city" after police reported at least 54 people shot over the Labor Day weekend.
"At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 8 people were killed," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "The last two weekends were similar. Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far. Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order called the "Protecting Chicago Initiative" on Saturday to prevent local police from collaborating with federal agents on joint patrols or arrests, including civil immigration enforcement.
"We will not have our police officers who are working hard every single day to drive down crime, deputize to do traffic stops and checkpoints for the president," Johnson said.
Trump also warned Gov. JB Pritzker on Saturday to "straighten it out, FAST, or we're coming."
Pritzker responded by emphasizing the need for civilian law enforcement assistance, such as ATF and FBI support, rather than military intervention. "Sending troops to an American city," Pritzker said, "is an illegal invasion," and he is prepared to challenge such actions in court.
Police incident reports reviewed by ABC News showed at least 32 separate shootings between Friday and Monday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was right about Chicago's crime crisis.
"JB Pritzker should do something radical! He should pick up the phone and call the president because the 'nothing to see here' move isn't working,” Leavitt wrote on X alongside a video from MSNBC.
